Ancient People of Arizona

All educational programs cost $135 each. This includes a 1 ½  hour program and all materials used for the hands-on project

FIRST  PEOPLE  OF  ARIZONA     Who were the first people to enter the Americas and arrive in Arizona?  What were their pathways? What animals did they hunt? What were their shelters like? Using visuals and inquiry-based learning with the students, the story of early people will unfold.  Samples of artifacts such as baskets, cloth, sandals, tools and mammoth fossils will be shown. The making of cordage will be demonstrated showing the actual extraction of fiber from an Arizona agave leaf to the twisting of these fibers on the thigh. Then everyone will twist agave fibers into a cord bracelet and add a blue bead. In culmination, “One Blue Bead” by Byrd Baylor will be read.  4th Grade & up

ROCK ART  OF  ARIZONA   One of the oldest evidences of people is their rock art.  Rock images painted or pecked on rocks are found throughout the world and every state of the United States. The rock art of Arizona will be introduced with a short power point or slide presentation showing Hohokam rock images that are found throughout metropolitan Phoenix. The making of petroglyphs and pictographs will be demonstrated.  Then each student will create a pictograph rock art panel making hand prints and art figures using paint, chalks and charcoal. 4th Grade & up
