MEXICAN FIESTA, MUSIC AND DANCE Fiestas are a true Mexican cultural experience. All of the parts that make a true fiesta are explored. Dance and music is explored beginning with the primitive Deer Dance. Authentic masks worn during dancing made of metal, wood, papier-mâché and coconuts are shown. To put the classroom into the spirit of a fiesta, everyone cuts out more than one papel picado (paper banner or flag) which can be glued on strings strung around the classroom or on individual strings so students may take them home to hang. Paper flowers will also be made to add to the festivities. K & up
MEXICAN KITCHENS AND COOKING One of the main ingredients in Mexican cooking is corn. Cooking utensils of a Mexican kitchen are laid out on a mat for all to see and then hear how meals are prepared in small villages of Mexico. The making of corn tortillas is demonstrated. Then the story is told about the introduction of wheat by the Spanish and how it was used to make flour tortillas. To climax the fun, flour tortillas are rolled out. They are watched as they bubble up on a griddle. The finale is eating them with butter and sugar/cinnamon. Yum, yum! K & up
