The Chinese of Arizona

All educational programs cost $135 each. This includes a 1 ½  hour program and all materials used for the hands-on project

CHINESE  KITCHENS  AND COOKING   The Chinese that arrived in Phoenix Arizona were a big help to the early settlers of Arizona.  Their produce farms helped provide the needed vegetables for the early pioneers.  They were also used in their cooking. The culinary art of Chinese cooking is very simple.  Utensils and the eating customs of the Chinese will be shown. Then teas will be the topic of discussion. The Chinese way of brewing tea will be performed for all to see. The fun will be in the trying out of chop sticks on mock noodles. Then almond cookies and tea will be enjoyed while the Chinese tale of “The Song Bird” will be heard. 3rd Grade & up

CHINESE  ARTS  AND CRAFTS   After an introduction of the Chinese history in Arizona, artifacts of the early Chinese inventions will be shown. Brass, silk, paper and porcelain are just some of the inventions of the Chinese. Artifacts made from these materials will be shown and discussed. Older students will use authentic Chinese brushes and ink and learn the basic techniques for Chinese Brush Painting. They will then create a panda on a moon fan.  The younger students will create colorful Chinese paper cuts and glue them on a moon fan.  The final touch will be the placement of an authentic Chinese seal on the fans.  3rd Grade & up
